The Project
Our client approached us to build a single-storey rear extension to their family home, providing much-needed additional space for a larger kitchen and dining area.
The existing property was a traditional brick-built house, and one of the client’s main concerns was making sure the new extension looked like it had always been part of the original building.
The Challenge
Matching the existing brickwork was one of the biggest challenges of the project.
The original house had weathered over several decades, giving the bricks a slightly different colour and texture from modern alternatives. We sourced several samples before selecting a brick that closely matched the existing property.
Careful attention was also needed around the corners, window openings and connection between the new and existing walls to ensure the extension blended naturally with the original building.
Our Approach
Before starting, we carefully measured the existing brick courses and checked the bond, mortar colour and joint profile.
We then:
- Carefully matched the new bricks to the existing property
- Set out the extension to maintain the existing brick coursing
- Constructed the new external walls using traditional bricklaying techniques
- Installed lintels above the new openings
- Took particular care around the junction with the existing building
- Matched the existing mortar colour and joint finish
- Checked levels and alignment throughout the build
Rather than simply building the extension as a separate structure, our aim was to make the new brickwork appear as though it had always been part of the original house.
The Result
The finished extension has completely transformed the rear of the property, creating a bright and spacious kitchen and dining area for the family.
The brickwork blends closely with the existing house, with consistent courses, mortar joints and detailing helping the extension feel like a natural continuation of the original building.
The client was particularly pleased with the attention to detail and the care taken to achieve a close match with the existing brickwork.
“We couldn’t be happier with the finished extension. The brickwork matches the original house extremely well and the whole extension looks like it has always been there. The workmanship and attention to detail were excellent.”
